In today's Writer's Almanac:

It was on this day
in 1892 that an early version of the Pledge of Allegiance appeared in a magazine called The Youth's Companion. It read: "I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands; one nation indivisible, with liberty and Justice for all."

Steady State vs. Big Bang [Sep. 8th, 2008|10:17 am]

dhimahi
Since the Laws of Thermodynamics appear to be based on Steady State Theory, do they work in a universe owned and operated by Big Bang theorists?

And since the Big Bang doesn't seem to allow for the creation of galaxies, does that mean that nothing existed until Science Fiction writers came along?

Just wondering...

After owning the series premier for a few *years*, I finally got around to watching it all the way through. Wow, it must be my mood but I need something life affirming again. I felt the same way recently after watching The Dark Knight.

Should I even bother to rent/buy the series by season now?

a blast from the IT past [Sep. 8th, 2008|08:34 am]

[mood | geeky]

For the IT geeks out there.
My dad's been in IT decades before it was called IT.

He's 70 and has never really retired fully. So here's his current job
=======
Starting next Wednesday, I'll be working full-time back in Information Technology.

I'll be working for H&R Block's technology center located in Dublin.

I'll be testing the new tax routines for 2009, and also be designing the future tax systems which will be implemented in later years.
All of it will be web-based, and I will be using some of the current web design and programming.

This is the 50-year anniversary of when I wrote my first computer program, in 1958. It was written in SOAP (not the current web-based SOAP) and written for the IBM 650, a first-generation computer. It had a 4K drum memory, and we entered some of the initial commands using switches on the console. I still have my IBM 650 SOAP manual.

I was wandering LJ and found an entry to something [info]blue_cat had posted and went and read the above (click the link) Take Back The Night keynote address at the University of Delaware, April 28, 2005.

For those of you who do not know, I am a survivor of sexual abuse. I know far too many other survivors of all ages.

When I was 11 (back in the 1960s) one of the girls in my sixth grade class was making extra money using sex. I never did find out how it all began, but I still can't wrap my mind around an 11 year old girl having sex in the middle of middle-class America.

Another girlfriend began having sex at the age of 12 when her older brother insisted. I sometimes wonder what he does with his daughters.

These stories are of women in their 50s but I know they aren't the only generation to go through this.

And here is Hanne's story as it first appeared here on LJ: http://chatworthy.blogspot.com/2004/08/no-pity-no-shame-no-silence.html

Heart Attack symptoms differ between women and men [Sep. 7th, 2008|06:03 pm]

dhimahi
[mood | annoyed]

And why it's taken so long for the medical profession to figure it out annoys the hell out of me. Women and men are physiologically different starting with the chromosomes. But 99% plus of testing data is from men and heart disease.

So, if you are a woman or love a woman or know a woman, please have her check this out, cos it could very well save her life.

http://usgovinfo.about.com/cs/healthmedical/a/womensami.htm

Women's major symptoms prior to their heart attack included:

# Unusual fatigue - 70%
# Sleep disturbance - 48%
# Shortness of breath - 42%
# Indigestion - 39%
# Anxiety - 35%

Women's major symptoms during the heart attack include:

# Shortness of breath - 58%
# Weakness - 55%
# Unusual fatigue - 43%
# Cold sweat - 39%
# Dizziness - 39%

Related NIH research into heart attacks in women includes possible ethnic and racial differences as well.

Cell service, the next generation [Sep. 7th, 2008|03:25 pm]

dhimahi
This is going to be an ongoing series as I research this. Since Gustav, there is a lot of information on how to keep your access when you are in an area hit hard by some kind of disaster which knocks out your power.

First off, cell phones MUST be kept dry, so when you know life is about to get wet and nasty, stuff it in a plastic baggie for easy access and waterproofness.

Next: if you are IN a hard hit area, know that text messaging will get through more likely than a voice call. I have never been fond of text messaging, but my next phone and cell account will have texting as part of the package.

Hand crank (or hand wound) cell phone chargers. There are a lot of them on the market but I recommend that you find one that isn't TOO portable. I have a hand wound flashlight/am&fm radio (doesn't charge cells) and it takes a goodly amount of winding before it will charge well. Then it runs for hours. But there are cell charging hand cranked/wound units that are larger and include weather radio, for example. Just make CERTAIN that your phone is compatible.

I've been with them for more than three years and they have many good points, but, I'm a consumer damn it (note to self... get consumer icon) and I want better service.

Is it possible to buy a phone from outside the company and set it up to replace my current phone which is dying by inches?

[mood |confused]

I have a FujiFilm FinePix A800 digital camera, which works great, and has no problems. It uses SD memory cards, and I have two 2GB cards for it.

I was hoping to be able to make a 'mini photo album' of the kids, putting it on one SD card, and then using the camera as the 'viewer' on my trip. However, it is showing a 'read error' when I try to view the images.

Right now, I'm using Windows Explorer to copy and paste the images back onto the SD card. There is a 'DCM' folder, and inside that is a 'FUJI_100' folder - and inside that is where the pictures are stored. I've copied pictures into the same folder where the original pictures are taken, and the camera can read the ones that haven't been uploaded to the computer, but the minute it hits one that has been uploaded and re-downloaded, it comes up with the error.

Suggestions? If I can't run it this way, I'm not sure how I'll bring pictures of the kids to LA - I'm NOT printing them out! I can certainly take a bunch in the next week, and just not upload them to the computer - but that leaves out a year of pictures, including Halloween, Christmas, and other fun 'picture moments'.

[mood |frustrated]

So I got a cold Thursday night (maybe from listening to all the vitriol from the RNC?), and after a bad night's sleep, Friday was sort of a daze for me (helped along by drowsy causing cold medicine). We didn't do much - Bean went to school, and then we went to the Habitat store to price out counters/things for the store. Nothing much, and the kids and I were in bed by 9 pm (Red stayed up later).

Today, when we were getting ready to go to the duckpond - I couldn't find my wallet. Now while I don't need a wallet to go to the duckpond (watching the ducks are free, grin) - this is troubling, because I'm scheduled to fly to LA on Thursday. Now, the last time I lost my wallet, it took 2 weeks to get a new license delivered, although I got a temporary card from the DMV. But they want a photo ID for travel, of course. We've been tearing through the house, trying to 'retrace steps' - but it's not working very well (that whole drowsy cold daze thing) - so I don't know if I had it with me when we went out on Friday, or if the last time I saw it was on Thursday. I've called the last place I -KNOW- I had it (the library), and the Habitat store, and neither have had it turned in.

I've checked online to see if the bank cards or credit cards were used - none so far, but with it being a weekend, that may not mean anything.

Sigh. I just called Southwest, and they said that I -WILL- be able to fly, but that they'll have to do more security checking, and that my bags (both checked and carry-on) will most likely be handchecked, and that I'll be wanded, possibly more than that. They said to bring supplementary ID to help with the process. I don't have my SS card, but I do have my birth certificate, marriage license, voter registration card, and W-2s, which show my current address with SS#. If I can, I'll pay the fee and get the new license, and that the temporary one (that I get at the DMV that day), combined with the other stuff, will be enough.

Have I mentioned that I -HATE- being sick?

...that I can still be cleaning my kitchen three and a half hours later and not be what I consider close to half done? It's not like it was that dirty to begin with. I just wanted to wash the coffee schmutz off the pot. Then I realized there was a spot on the counter top, so I moved the tins, which turned out to be empty, so I had to go to the cupboard for refills, but couldn't find them right away, so I had to reorganize. I think I'm at the point where I can work my way backwards through the chain and get back to the coffee pot.

Then I can work on the east side of the kitchen.

Oi.
